You sure I do not need to pay that 7704 again. This was my last question when I spoke with the customer service team. I already heard similar answers many times. But every time I saw a new email from the car rental company asking for money my heart still jumped a bit. The whole story started when I rented a car in Cape Town in South Africa. I went there for business and my schedule was tight. So I booked a Europcar car on QEEQ before the trip. I just wanted to land and pick up the car at the airport quickly. It was around early morning on December 18th 2025 when I walked to the Europcar counter with my suitcase. They gave me a Toyota Corolla with automatic gear and four doors. The car looked pretty new. I felt quite relaxed at that moment and I thought at least transport for this trip was settled. The real problem came slowly after I returned the car. I went to drop off the car in Cape Town on January 7th 2026 in the afternoon. The process was very normal. The staff at the Europcar counter checked the car quickly and said I could go. I believed the story ended there. I thought the deposit would be released after some time and the rental fee was already paid in advance. So I did not think too much about it. Some time later I was in my office checking emails. I suddenly saw an email from the rental company. It was a payment collection notice saying I still owed 7704 ZAR. I was totally confused at that moment. My first reaction was that this might be a scam email. Then I checked the sender address and found out it was really from Europcar. I felt annoyed because business trips already bring so many tasks. I did not want to spend more energy on strange bill problems. I checked my credit card bill first. The rental fee was fully paid and there was a record of a deposit hold. But they were now saying I had an outstanding payment. I sent a few emails to the rental company. Sometimes they did not reply. Sometimes they replied in a very unclear way. I could feel they were also confused. One moment they talked about the deposit. Next moment they talked about the invoice and asked me to pay more. As a business traveler I care a lot about time and clear costs. This back and forth made me feel that my money and my trip were not under control. So I contacted the platform customer service again and told them the whole story. When that call started I was a bit impatient and also worried that they would just give me some standard answer and stop. To my surprise they did not rush to give a conclusion. They first helped me sort what happened and confirmed that the rental company kept sending me payment requests. They asked about the time and amount of each email. I could feel they were really trying to understand the issue and not just saying nice words. Later things became even more complicated. I received more emails about my deposit and some refund amounts. The numbers were not always the same. Sometimes the rental company called me and said I still owed money and needed to pay soon. I felt quite nervous because the amount was not small and it involved both my credit card and my deposit. I was worried it might affect future spending or my credit record. During this period the thing that made me less stressed was that the support team kept following up. It was not like they disappeared after one message. Every time there was new information I could send it to them and they would help me check what the rental company was doing. A few times I was already tired after work but then I got a reply from them saying they had called the rental company and confirmed again that the booking was prepaid and I should not be charged extra. I would breathe out a little. At least I was not standing alone against cold collection emails. For a while the deposit release also confused me. I saw only part of the deposit returned on my bill while the rest stayed frozen. The rental company gave a very general answer and said they needed time to confirm if there were any fines. I can understand they have their own process. But as a customer it is stressful to see a big amount of money frozen for weeks. I sent this situation to the support team again. They did not use complex terms. They explained in simple words what they knew at that moment and reminded me to check my credit card bill carefully to see the actual postings. Then the collection department of the rental company sent me another email. They said they had not received payment and talked about the invoice again and asked me to pay 7704 ZAR. At that point I did not know who I should trust any more. I forwarded the screenshots to the support team again. This was where I started to feel what dedicated follow up means. They did not push me to fight alone with the rental company. They helped me compare the amounts and the previous refund records. They explained which parts were just deposit holds and releases and which parts were real charges. The whole thing lasted for some time. There were several moments when I was really fed up and even thought about just paying the bill to end the problem. But every time I remembered that this fee was not supposed to exist I hesitated again. During those weeks my days were full of work and my nights were used to check screenshots and bills in my hotel room or at home. I felt quite drained. But seeing that they kept checking the situation and updated me when they had new answers gave me some mental support. The last time I contacted them I asked that same question you sure I do not need to pay that 7704 again. By then the rental company had sent another reminder and I was already afraid of seeing that number. The support team went over the case one more time. They said they had already confirmed this was a prepaid booking and I did not need to make another payment. They also suggested that if I received new collection emails I could still send them over. When I ended the call I still had a little worry in my mind. But compared with the first stage when everything felt messy and out of control I already felt much better. As someone who travels for business often the thing I am most afraid of is wasted time on useless problems like this. This case was not easy and it did not end in one day. But at least there was a team staying with the problem and with me. I did not feel thrown in the middle to argue alone with the rental company. Looking back the rental company had many issues with their process and communication. What helped me was that the platform I booked through kept standing on my side and helped me sort out the confusing fees and bills step by step.
