Why do they charge me 700 MYR for car damage. This question stayed in my head for days. I booked the car on QEEQ. I picked it up in Kuala Lumpur around May 11 in the evening, a bit after nine. It was a Honda City from R&R Rent A Car, automatic. At the counter I walked around the car and took a video. The light was not very bright but I could see some details. I felt kind of safe. I returned the car also in Kuala Lumpur, around May 18 in the early evening. I parked, talked quickly with the staff at the rental counter, and then left. No one said there was any problem with the car at that moment. The real trouble came more than one month later. The rental company sent me a message saying they would take 700 MYR from my deposit for damage and also some money for a traffic fine. I was shocked, especially when I saw their photos. There was a scratch on the left back door. In my mind that scratch was old. I thought it was already there when I picked up the car. I opened my own video and some screenshots from that day and checked again and again. I felt very uncomfortable. I felt like an easy target because I am an overseas traveler. So I contacted the customer support and told them my doubts. I sent my screenshots too. For me this case already passed some time, and explaining all the details again was tiring. But their attitude made me less stressed. They did not ask me to fight alone with the rental company. They kept helping me talk to the rental side, asking how exactly they charge, how much deposit they took, and what is inside that 700 MYR. I could feel they were sorting all the messy information for me and then telling me the result in simple words. Later the rental company said the damage fee included repair cost and loss of use. They returned some money to me and the final damage fee became 500 MYR. I still felt it was expensive and I still felt some marks were not made by me. But during the whole time the support team stayed with me like an older student who knows more. They explained how things work there and reminded me to take clearer videos next time when I pick up a car. Sometimes they asked me to confirm something and sometimes they went back to the rental company to ask for more proof. I do not really understand all the steps but I could feel someone was covering my back. It was not like they just say one line and close my case. As an overseas visitor in a strange place being charged money like this feels very unsafe. The rules and language are different. In this situation the main thing I felt was that someone followed my problem closely and tried to make it easier for me. That feeling of being looked after is important to me.
