Warm air outside the airport. Bright sun on the ground. I pulled my suitcase toward the Alicante car rental area and I felt pretty relaxed. I booked the car with QEEQ so I was not really worried about money anymore. A few days before that, I was at home in Germany. It was late and I was on my laptop. I saw the option called One-Dollar Freeze. It said I could pay only 1 dollar first and lock the booking. I just sat there and stared at the screen for a moment. I saw the full price and it looked a bit heavy for my budget. But this 1 dollar thing made my mind calm right away. I chose that option and clicked confirm. My bank sent a message. The amount was really small and clear. I felt like I saved my card from a big hit. It was like I reserved my spot with almost no cost and I could breathe a bit. Jump to a few days later in Spain. On the plane I did not think about my card limit or some big payment. I already knew the rest of the money would be taken automatically before the rental started. I did not need to do anything else or remember some date. When I reached the Avis counter I just showed my documents and my booking number. The staff there could find my booking in their system. They did not ask me to pay something strange or extra at the desk, which felt really good. I was standing next to the counter waiting for the Opel Corsa and I suddenly thought about my choice again. If I had to pay the full amount at the very beginning, I think I would have hesitated a lot. Maybe I would even change plans or look for another company. With only 1 dollar first I could fix the booking and then let the rest be handled later, with no interest. For me as a solo traveler with a pretty tight budget, it removed a lot of money stress. On the return day around March 9 in the afternoon I drove back to the Alicante parking area. I checked the car, gave the keys back and that was it. During the whole trip I almost forgot how I paid, because everything went smooth and there were no weird extra fees on my bill. For me this way of paying just 1 dollar first made the whole booking feel light. It gave me a buffer so my credit card did not feel under pressure. As someone traveling alone that feeling matters a lot.
