The story actually started with a bill in my email. I was already back home from Turku in Finland for a few days when I saw a message from the rental company. They said I had to pay 1300 EUR for damage on a BMW X1. My mind went blank. My hands were sweaty. I only remembered that I booked the car on QEEQ and I added AXA Full Coverage. I pulled myself back to the day I picked up the car in Turku. It was around 1 pm on January 27. The sky was that cold gray blue. I walked into the SIXT counter alone with my luggage. The staff gave me the key and said it was a BMW X1. I was actually pretty happy. The car was clean and quite new. It was automatic and easy to drive. I even walked around the car to check it and took some photos with my phone. There was a bit of thin snow on the ground and the lights on the car were shining on it. A few days later I returned the car on January 31 at almost the same time. The staff checked the car quickly and said it was fine. I pulled my suitcase and walked out. I felt that this solo driving experience was smooth. I did not think there would be any problems at all. Then came that email. It listed the damage and the amount. It said I needed to pay 1300 EUR. That number really scared me. It was more than most of the money I spent on this whole trip. I kept thinking again and again. Did I hit something. Was there any scratch. I only remembered one night when I was reversing. The road was a bit slippery with snow. I drove very slowly and even got out of the car to check. I quickly opened my old booking and saw that I really bought AXA Full Coverage. My heart calmed down a little. I saved the email from the rental company and put together the damage file and photos they gave me. I sent everything they needed and submitted the claim. Those days I felt a bit anxious. I was afraid that I did something wrong and the money would not be paid back. The customer support talked to me in a calm way and checked if I already paid the 1300 EUR. I said yes and still felt nervous. I kept saying that I had already paid and sent the PDF bill and emails. They said they would help me with the claim and I just needed to wait for the result. It felt like I handed a big stone to someone else and then could only think of it from time to time. Some days later I was at school between classes and scrolling on my phone. I suddenly saw a bank notice. There was money coming in. I checked my email and saw that the claim was successful. The amount was 1300 EUR. At that moment I was so relieved. I let out a small shout at the door of the classroom. My friend asked what happened. I just said that the problem with my Finland rental was fixed. When I look back at this, I realize that when I clicked AXA Full Coverage on the page, I did not think so much. I only felt that one more layer of insurance would make me feel safe. When the damage really happened, that protection turned into real money and stopped the 1300 EUR from falling on me. The relaxed feeling I had when I returned the car feels like it got an extra sentence from time. It says my careful choice was worth it. Now when I see the photo of that white BMW X1, I think of the snow, the road and the freedom of driving alone in a new city. I do not first think of the scary number in that email. And I am glad that when I booked with QEEQ I clicked that extra insurance. Otherwise this little story might become a memory I would not want to talk about for a long time.
