That night I was staring at my trip plan and thinking about going to Nanaimo in Canada in a few days. My flight and hotel were all booked. The thing I worried about most was if the car rental price would suddenly change. I booked the car through QEEQ so I felt excited and also a bit nervous. I wanted to drive around Nanaimo and see the ocean but I also needed to watch my budget. I picked a Ford Edge with Budget. It was automatic and for five people. I thought it would be good if my friends joined. My pick up time was around the morning of July 21 at about eleven. The return was around the morning of July 27 at about ten. Everything looked simple. One night in my room I was checking my email on my phone. I saw a message about my booking and a note about price change. Then I suddenly remembered that I had added Price Drop Protector when I made the booking. In my mind I went back to that moment. I did not think much that time. The name sounded cool and I just clicked it. I only had a light idea that maybe it could help if the price went down. I did not really care too much. A few days later I noticed that the order details were a bit different. It still showed Nanaimo as the pick up and return place and still with Budget. But the price was not the same as before. At first I thought it was some kind of error. I read it again slowly. Then I saw a small line that showed the difference and it said they gave me back 14.30 GBP. For a second I just stared at that number and tried to remember the old price. Fourteen point three zero pounds is not a huge number. But for me as a student it is already the cost of a nice meal. That day I was eating a burger in the cafeteria and checking my phone at the same time. When I saw that line about the refund I felt like I just got free money. I did not talk to anyone about price. I did not compare deals again. I did not repeat the booking process. The money just appeared there. I turned my phone a bit and showed the screen to my classmate. I said look this is the thing I told you before that can watch the price for me. When I think back to the booking day there was nothing special. I chose the car filled my details and clicked confirm. Then I just waited for my trip. As the travel dates came closer I was thinking more about my route in Nanaimo. I imagined where to drive first after I got the car which beach to see and how to plan the last day before returning the car around ten in the morning. Some friends asked if my budget was tight. I felt calmer because I already had that small extra money back. I even added it into my travel budget list and told myself I could use it for a small souvenir. The part that I really liked was the idea that I saved money without doing anything. Normally when we book something we accept the price and then forget it. If it goes up we just feel unlucky. If it goes down we never know. Before this I had rented cars on other sites and after booking I never opened the order page again. This time it was different. They watched the price for me. When it dropped they moved my booking to the lower price and counted the difference. When I finally saw it everything was already done. I only needed to read the number and smile a bit inside. Those days I was also packing my luggage and checking my travel notes. Sometimes I opened the order again and looked at the car details. I imagined myself standing in the parking lot in Nanaimo pulling my suitcase and searching for the Ford Edge. In my head I walked to the counter said my name to the staff got the key and then went to the car. I checked the body of the car adjusted the seat set the GPS and slowly drove out of the lot. When I saw these scenes in my mind I also thought of the 14.30 GBP. It felt like someone in the background helped me take care of the small things so I could have a little more space in my budget. Once my mom called me and asked if my travel money was enough. I told her it was okay and that I even saved some on the car rental. She asked me how. I explained Price Drop Protector to her. I said that after I choose the car if the price goes down later they change it to the cheaper price and send me back the difference. She said it sounded smart and then reminded me to stay safe in Canada. I thought to myself that I am not very good at watching every price change but this time I still got a chance to save. My trip to Nanaimo is only a few days away now. On my schedule it says I will pick up the car around eleven in the morning at the rental spot near the ocean side streets. I picture a quiet small city with fresh air and maybe a bit of sea smell. On July twenty seventh I will drive back to the same place and return the car around ten in the morning then walk away with my luggage to the next stop. I still have not planned every small road in detail. But I know that at least for the money side I feel lighter because of this price drop service. That 14.30 GBP is like a tiny secret sign that this trip is not only about spending. It also has a small moment where I feel taken care of and I get to keep a bit more in my pocket.
