I first saw this One-Dollar Freeze option on QEEQ and I was a bit nervous. I needed a car to drive from Vancouver to Calgary and the trip was not short. I was flying in from Australia and I was worried that if I paid the full amount at once and my plan changed, a big part of my money would be stuck. I kept thinking that if I paid everything now my credit card limit would be very tight and I could not book other stuff easily. Then I noticed I could lock the car by paying only 1 dollar. I told myself this is just like paying for a soda so I decided to try it. I chose an Avis Chevrolet Malibu with automatic gear and four doors and five seats. I planned to pick up the car in Vancouver on July 12 at 10 am and drop it off in Calgary on July 18 at 10 am. When I booked it the page showed I only needed to pay 1 USD first and the rest would be charged automatically before the rental started. When I saw this I felt much less pressure. My bill only showed a very small amount at the start. I thought if my plan changed later at least I would not get hit by a big charge right now. When I clicked pay I watched my phone screen very carefully. I checked that the amount really said 1 USD. In my head I said please do not add any strange fee. After the payment I looked at the bill and it showed a clean one dollar. I told my friend I just booked a car with only 1 dollar now. He thought I was joking and asked how that was even possible. I sent him a screenshot. He replied that this was smart and that my card would not get maxed out at once. A few days later I checked my credit card again and it still only showed that 1 dollar. At that time I was also planning other parts of my trip like flights and places to stay. I felt this kind of payment worked well for someone young like me. I did not have a big hold on my card and I could still pay for other things. I did not need to keep counting my remaining credit all the time. One day my mom asked if this Canada trip would cost a lot. I told her for the car I only paid a small part first and the rest would be charged later by them so I did not need to swipe the card again and again myself. She felt better after hearing that. Closer to the start date I remembered to check if the rest of the money was taken. I opened my banking app and saw the bigger charge on my card. The time showed it was right before the rental start. I felt kind of surprised but in a good way. The whole thing just happened in the background and I did not have to do anything. No one pushed me to pay everything right away. It felt like someone planned the timing for me and I only needed to watch my trip. For me the biggest feeling was that my credit card stress was much lower. In the past when I rented a car or paid for something big I always felt a bit of pain when I saw one huge number on the bill. My heart would beat faster. This time I only paid 1 dollar at first. When I opened my bill each day it felt calm and simple. I did not see a scary long line of big numbers. It made me more willing to plan my trip in detail and even spend a bit more on a nicer stay in some places. This style of paying a tiny amount to lock the booking and then being charged later really fits someone my age. Even before the trip started I already felt that this payment experience was smoother than any other time I booked a car.
