When I drove the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited back to the return area in Kingshill in the US Virgin Islands and handed the keys to the staff, one question popped into my head. What if I had paid the full amount in one shot at the beginning. I asked myself that and the answer was pretty clear. My credit card would feel very tight. It was around June thirteenth at noon. I was standing with my kids at the Avis counter. The sun was strong and I had a pile of luggage. My kid asked me if we could still go to the beach that day. I signed the papers and thought in my head that it was really good that I had only paid 1 dollar first when I booked. If not I might still be worrying about the bill at that moment. Why did I think like that. Because I remembered how I felt when I first booked. Traveling with kids means you spend money on everything. Flights and hotel and food and small toys. When I saw the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited I thought it was perfect for the family. Four doors and five seats and my kids could sit more comfortably. Then the second thought came. One full charge now might be too much for my card. When I was on QEEQ I saw the One-Dollar Freeze option and I paused. I asked myself if this was really okay. Pay only 1 dollar to lock the car then the rest is charged before the trip. I asked again if there would be some hidden fee. I checked the details as much as I could and saw it was just a flexible payment plan with no extra interest. I even muttered to myself that no interest means my pressure is smaller. So I used 1 dollar to book the car first. There was still some time before our trip. My idea was simple. Lock the car and then handle the money slowly because they would charge the rest before I picked up the car. In the next days at home I planned activities for my kids and checked our budget. Sometimes at night I would have this thought. Maybe I should switch to a cheaper car. Then I asked myself again. I already paid just 1 dollar and this car size is just right for us. Changing now feels more trouble. Every time I did the math and saw that small 1 dollar charge I felt calm. My credit card did not suddenly drop a big number. Around June twelfth we flew to the US Virgin Islands. When we left the airport the air was hot and my kids were asking to go to the hotel fast. I opened my phone and checked the bill. The rest of the rental amount was already charged like they said and the number was correct. I asked myself another question. Did they charge more or add something strange. The answer again was no. It was just the same amount they showed me before. At the Avis counter I showed my booking to the staff and the process went fine. In my head I went through the whole thing again. First step I only paid 1 dollar. Second step they charged the rest before the trip. I did not even worry about the exact day it was charged. For me the most important part was that there was no surprise charge and no interest sitting on my credit card. Traveling with kids means I have many small things to manage. Drinks and floaties and snacks and some little gifts for them. I was worried that if a big rental payment hit my card at the start I would feel nervous every time I swiped. Because of this One-Dollar Freeze I spread my spending out and my mind felt lighter. During the trip I kept asking myself one more question. Would I pay like this again next time. I saw a picture in my head. I sit at my computer pay only 1 dollar and then go do other stuff with a clear mind. With kids my time and energy are not enough. If I can worry about one less thing I feel like I win. Around June twenty first at noon when I returned the car and my kids were sitting nearby with their phones I did a quick sum of the trip costs. I saw that at least for the rental part I never got scared by a sudden big charge and I did not have to think about interest at all. I told myself this way fits a parent like me who brings kids and also has to watch the budget. And in the back of my mind I remembered that if I had not seen One-Dollar Freeze on QEEQ at the start I might not have booked this Jeep so early.
