Do I really need to pay a big amount at once just to book a car for a solo trip to Tulum in Mexico? That was the first thing in my head when I booked my car with QEEQ. What pulled me in was not only the car but the One-Dollar Freeze they offered. When I saw this name I read the explanation a few times to be sure it really meant I only needed to pay 1 dollar first to lock the car. I felt more relaxed right away because I was not sure if I wanted to charge the full rental price on my card at that moment. There was still some time before my trip and my Tulum plan was still growing. My credit card was also a bit tight during that period. I was sitting in my room in front of my laptop looking at the Chevrolet Onix at the Mexico Tulum location. It was automatic with four doors and five seats. It was perfect for me as a solo traveler who still has a good amount of luggage. In my mind I saw different pictures. One second it was the road by the sea and the next second I was doing math and thinking if I pay everything now my card limit will be under pressure for weeks. So when I found out I could use One-Dollar Freeze to pay just 1 dollar first and lock the booking it felt like someone helped me breathe out. When I clicked pay the amount on the screen was only 1.00. It was so small that it almost felt not real. I checked the page again to make sure there were no strange extra fees. I was happy when I saw there was no interest. That part made me feel safe because I did not want any random interest later that would make my bill look worse. When it got close to the pickup day around April 19 I really felt how smart that 1 dollar choice was. During that time I could keep my credit card limit for flights hotels and daily costs. I did not feel like all my money was locked inside a future plan. I opened my phone and checked the booking. The car was confirmed the pickup place was Mexico Tulum and the time was around one in the afternoon. I just needed to wait for the trip to start. On the day I arrived in Tulum the sun was very strong and the air felt heavy and hot when I walked out with my suitcase. As I walked to the rental office I was thinking if I had already paid the rest. I remembered they would charge the remaining amount automatically before the rental started so I was not very nervous. I still opened my banking app just to look. The rest of the rental fee had already been charged. There were no strange extra costs and there was no interest at all. It was exactly like the description I saw at the beginning. When I reached the MEX counter I felt calm. I knew the car was locked for me long ago and there would be no problem like someone telling me my booking was not valid because I did not pay in full. While the staff checked my information I suddenly remembered myself at home in front of the laptop paying just that 1 dollar. Now I was standing at the counter and it felt like that small click was a pretty smart move. For someone traveling alone this way of booking with a tiny payment first and the rest later really pushed a lot of pressure away. During the next few days in Tulum around April 20 to April 23 I drove the Chevrolet Onix around the town and to the beaches. I sometimes thought about this payment plan. It was not because I was worried about money. It was the opposite. I did not have to think about it at all and that was rare for me. I could focus on the road the palm trees and the clear sky instead of my card statement. On the return day around noon I drove back to the return spot in Tulum. I parked the car they checked it and I gave back the key and signed. It was simple and smooth. At that moment I remembered that evening about a month earlier at home when I booked the car and only paid 1 dollar. If I had needed to pay the full amount right away I think I would have hesitated much more and maybe even looked for other choices. Now when I look back this One-Dollar Freeze that lets you lock a car with just 1 dollar and no interest made the whole booking experience feel light from the very start. For a solo traveler who needs to plan a budget and wants to keep some card limit free this way of paying fits really well.
