When I think about this trip now, the thing that made me feel most relaxed was not going to St Thomas. It was the feeling that I locked a car with just 1 dollar. My two kids were next to me asking if we really got a Nissan Kicks and I joked with them. I said that I used only one dollar to hold the car. The real booking happened around the middle of March. That night the kids fell asleep very late. My wife and I finally sat down to look for a car. Our plan was to reach St Thomas around noon on March 21 and return the car around noon on March 26. So we set the pick up and drop off time around 12 pm. I needed a car to drive the family around the island and I did not want my credit card limit to be pressed too hard at once. When I saw the One-Dollar Freeze option on my phone, my first thought was that it sounded like an ad for kids. Pay only 1 dollar to book a car. I turned to my wife and said we could try and just pay 1 dollar first. She looked at the screen and said that if there was no interest then it was fine. She said the full payment before the trip would still be ok. I tried to book. I chose a Budget Nissan Kicks. It is automatic, four doors and five seats. It is just right for a family of four with luggage. When I clicked confirm I was still waiting for some strange fee to pop up. On the payment page I saw only 1.00 dollar to pay. I laughed a little because I never book something so important for just one dollar. The next day I logged in again to check the order. The status showed confirmed and the car company side was fine. I told my wife that even if plans changed we would just lose 1 dollar. She laughed and said that this 1 dollar bought us peace of mind. In the next few days I did not do much about the order. I only checked my credit card bill sometimes to see if they charged more. Nothing changed in that time. I felt calm. If I had to pay a big amount at the start, I know I would keep counting money and worry about changing plans and extra fees. Two days before the trip I checked the order again. It showed that the full amount would be charged soon. I felt pretty calm. I told my kids that the car was ready and that when we landed we could go pick it up. I also told them that the money was not all taken at the beginning. For a parent who travels with kids, this kind of pace is really important. Plans can change because of their mood or sleep. I do not want to feel stress from money on top of that. Later the charge showed on my credit card. I checked it carefully. There was no interest and no strange fee. The total price was the same as what I saw when I booked. That first 1 dollar was just to hold the spot. My wife said that it was good we chose this way or I would talk about money the whole time on the island. She was right. On the day we reached St Thomas, around noon, we walked out of the airport with our bags. The sun was very bright. The kids were shouting that they wanted to go to the beach and also asking where the car was. I felt steady because everything was already arranged. We just needed to follow the order and go to the Budget counter. For me the most important part of this whole process was that first One-Dollar Freeze experience. It made me feel relaxed before we even got to the island. Now when friends ask me about renting a car, I just say I booked through QEEQ that time and I tell them about the One-Dollar Freeze way to pay. For a family with kids like mine, it works well. The car is booked and the credit card does not feel heavy at the start.
