When I think about that car rental in Turkey the first thing in my mind is not the view but the numbers on my bill. I booked the car with QEEQ and I thought it would just be a normal rental. Then I saw a few charges in Turkish lira on my credit card and I got nervous right away. The whole story actually started after I returned the car. It was around the afternoon of April twenty sixth or twenty seventh at Izmir airport. I was sitting in the terminal with my bag and I checked my credit card app. I saw two pending holds of 8000 lira each one charge of 7654.79 lira and another one of 4999.97 lira. At first I thought I read it wrong. I checked again and did the math. It looked like much more than what I expected to pay. I remembered the night I picked up the car in Denizli around April twenty fourth or twenty fifth. The light at the Europcar counter was kind of dim. The staff gave me some papers and spoke fast. I already felt a bit unsure. From that moment the thought that I might be overcharged kept spinning in my head. Now when I look back these numbers are not scary anymore because the support team helped me ask about each charge and explained them. I slowly learned that some amounts were deposits some were one way drop fees and some difference came from exchange rates. At that time I knew nothing. I only saw many charges and felt like my money was just taken away. I want to start from the result. Right now I know that the final real charge was 7654.79 lira for the one way return and the rest were deposit holds that would be released. But on that day I was very confused. I was pulling my suitcase with one hand and typing on my phone with the other hand. I wrote a long message to their support. I told them I saw 7654.79 lira plus two 8000 lira holds and one 4999.97 lira and I really did not understand any of it. As a visitor in a foreign country seeing so many numbers on my statement made me feel a bit scared. I was afraid the rental company would just take money and no one would help me. The reply came faster than I expected. It really felt like someone was specially following my case. They told me not to worry too much and said they would ask the rental company. They also reminded me that some of these 8000 lira amounts were only temporary holds and not final charges. I was sitting in the waiting area listening to Turkish announcements that I could not understand. I was tired and stressed. When I saw that someone answered me carefully and checked the details one by one I felt a bit calmer. During the next few days after I went back to Singapore this problem was still in my mind. Every time I had a break I opened the app to see if the 8000 lira holds changed. Each time there was something new I texted them again. It felt a bit like waiting for test results at school. The exam is already over but you keep worrying about the score. The support team kept updating me. They told me they were in touch with the rental company. They explained that the deposit would be cancelled after some working days. They also told me that the 7654.79 lira was the correct one way drop fee and it matched what I should pay. When the bank changed it to my home currency it just looked like a bit more. Before this I had no idea about such small differences. I only followed the number on the screen. I was stuck on the idea that I paid one extra deposit. I really believed one of the 8000 lira amounts was not normal. Support explained that the total deposit amount in the rules was about that level and the way the rental company held it made it look like two parts. They also told me to watch the pending status on my card because when the bank finished processing it my limit would come back. I remember staring at my banking app and watching those pending lines slowly disappear. It felt like I could finally breathe. In the end what I felt the most was that someone was walking with me through all these numbers that I did not understand. I am not good at calling foreign companies. I do not know their terms. If I had to solve it alone I might give up and just accept the loss. This time they kept checking for me and telling me which line was deposit and which line was the real charge. My job was only to wait a bit. For a person like me who still feels like a student and always needs a calculator when doing math this kind of care is very clear. Even though I did get a bit annoyed and worried that the deposit would take a long time to be released I also learned that next time if something like this happens I do not have to panic alone. Someone can help turn these complicated numbers into simple words I can understand.
