Stress-Free Fueling Guide in Mozambique

This comprehensive guide walks you through refueling your rental car in Mozambique, from finding stations to payment options, ensuring a stress-free experience.

The Low-Fuel Light is On, What Now?

There you are, cruising along a scenic stretch of Mozambican coastline when a tiny, amber light flickers to life on your dashboard. A wave of anxiety can easily set in. Where's the next station? Do they take cards? What do I even ask for?

Relax. Driving through Mozambique is an unforgettable adventure, and refueling your rental car doesn't have to be daunting. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

Embrace the Local Rhythm

While the process might differ from what you're used to at home, it's remarkably straightforward once you know the local rhythm. Most fuel stations are full-service, meaning an attendant will handle everything for you. From finding a station to driving away with a full tank and complete confidence, we've got you covered.

The Refueling Ritual: A Step-by-Step Guide

  • Step 1: Finding a Station

Keep an eye out for familiar international and regional brands like TotalEnergies, Galp, and Petromoc. In major cities like Maputo, Beira, and Nampula, you'll find them plentifully. However, as you venture into more rural areas, they become much scarcer. Don't wait until the last minute.
  • Step 2: Approaching the Pump

Pull up to an available pump, making sure your car's fuel tank is on the correct side. If you're unsure which side it's on, there's often a small arrow next to the fuel gauge icon on your dashboard pointing the way. An attendant will usually approach your vehicle as soon as you stop.
  • Step 3: Communicating with the Attendant

Roll down your window and greet the attendant with a friendly "Bom dia" (Good morning), "Boa tarde" (Good afternoon), or "Boa noite" (Good evening). They will likely ask what you need. Don't worry if you don't speak Portuguese; gestures and a few key phrases go a long way.
  • Step 4: Specifying Fuel Type and Amount

This is the most critical step. Clearly state the fuel type (see Section 4 for details). Then, tell the attendant how much you want. The easiest way is to say "Encher, por favor" (Fill it up, please). Alternatively, you can ask for a specific monetary value, for example, "Dois mil Meticais" (2,000 Meticais).
  • Step 5: The Attendant's Service

The attendant will open your fuel cap, insert the nozzle, and begin pumping the fuel. It is common for them to also offer to clean your front and rear windscreens while the tank is filling—a welcome service after a dusty drive. You can simply nod or say "Sim, por favor" (Yes, please).
  • Step 6: Payment and Tipping

Once fueling is complete, the attendant will confirm the final amount. You will typically pay the attendant directly. While tipping isn't mandatory, it is a much-appreciated gesture for good service, especially if they cleaned your windows.
  • Step 7: Final Checks and Departure

The attendant will replace your fuel cap. Before you drive off, do a quick mental check: is the fuel cap securely closed? Does the fuel gauge on your dashboard reflect the new, higher level? Give a final "Obrigado" (Thank you) and you're on your way.

Cash, Card, or Something Else? Payment Options

Cash (MZN)
Mozambican Metical
Universally accepted everywhere. No network failures to worry about.Need to carry large amounts of cash. ATMs can be unreliable outside main towns.Everywhere
Your most reliable option
Credit/Debit Cards
VISA, Mastercard
Convenient and secure. Accepted at many modern stations in cities.Highly unreliable. Poor connectivity, terminals often offline, skimming risks.Cities only

Golden Rule: Always carry enough cash in Meticais to cover your fuel needs, especially when traveling outside major cities.

Know Your Fuel: Gasolina vs. Gasóleo

This is non-negotiable. Putting the wrong fuel in a rental car can cause catastrophic engine damage.

Gasolina

Standard unleaded petrol (gasoline)

Gasóleo

Diesel

Check your rental agreement and look for a sticker inside the fuel filler cap before you even start the car for the first time.

The Tipping Question

While you are not required to tip, it is a common and appreciated custom. If the attendant provides good service—especially if they clean your windscreen thoroughly—a small tip of 20-50 Meticais is a kind gesture that will be very well received.

Think of it as a small price for friendly service.

Safety First
Refuel during daylight hours whenever possible
Prefer large, well-lit, busy stations with major brands
Keep your car doors locked while being serviced
Stay aware of your surroundings when handling cash
Plan Ahead for Rural Routes

This is perhaps the most important rule for a Mozambican road trip. Fuel stations can be extremely far apart, particularly on long stretches of the main EN1 highway north of Vilanculos. It is not uncommon to drive 200-300 kilometers between reliable stations.

Adopt the overlander's rule:

"If you see a fuel station and your tank is at or below half-full, fill it up."

Don't risk pushing on to the next town.

Drive On with Confidence

Refueling in Mozambique is not a hurdle, but a simple part of the local travel experience. It's a straightforward, human-to-human transaction that you'll quickly master. By remembering to plan ahead, carry sufficient cash in the local currency, and clearly communicate your fuel type, you remove all the stress from the process.
