Part A: Before You Book - The Digital Detective Work
Read the Fine Print (T&Cs)
This is the single most important step. Before you click book, locate and read the Terms and Conditions (T&Cs). Use your browser's search function (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) to find these crucial keywords: Excess/Deductible (€1,000 to €3,000 liability), Deposit (credit card security block), Fuel policy (look for Full-to-Full), Out-of-hours fees (check Cagliari Airport opening times), Cross-border/Ferry rules for nearby Sardinian islands.
Decode the Insurance Jargon
Your rental quote almost always includes a basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). Understand that this is not comprehensive insurance. What it includes: damage to the car's bodywork, but only after you have paid the high excess amount. What it excludes: CDW almost universally excludes damage to tires, windows, mirrors, the roof, the undercarriage, and loss of keys. These are the most common types of minor damage.
The Fuel Policy Trap
The only policy that protects you is Full-to-Full. You receive the car with a full tank and must return it with a full tank. Beware of Full-to-Empty (or Pre-Purchase Fuel): This policy forces you to buy a full tank of fuel from the rental company at an inflated price, which often includes a non-refundable service charge. You will not be refunded for any unused fuel, guaranteeing you lose money.
Check for Extra Driver & Age-Related Fees
Surcharges are common for drivers under the age of 25 or, in some cases, over 70. Adding a second driver to the contract will also incur a daily fee that can add up significantly over a long rental period. Ensure this is calculated in your total price upfront.
