Insurance: The Upselling Gauntlet
In Chile, all vehicles must have "Seguro Obligatorio de Accidentes Personales" (SOAP). This mandatory insurance is typically included in your rental price, but it only covers personal injury to the driver, passengers, and third parties—it does not cover any damage to the rental car or other property.
Your basic rental quote will include a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), known locally as cobertura parcial por colisión y robo. This is not full insurance. It comes with a very high deductible (franquicia or deducible), often ranging from $600 to over $1,000 USD. At the counter, agents will use this high deductible to pressure you into buying expensive supplementary insurance packages that reduce the deductible to zero.
The Patagonian Trap: Before you buy, ask for the list of exclusions. Standard CDW and even some premium packages in Chile explicitly exclude damage to tires, windshields, and the undercarriage, which are the most common types of damage when driving on the gravel roads (ripio) south of Puerto Montt. Insist on seeing the policy in writing to understand if you are truly covered for the conditions you will be driving in.
