Category A: The Insurance Maze (CDW, LDW, PAI)
At the rental desk, you will almost certainly be offered a range of insurance products, often with confusing acronyms like CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), LDW (Loss Damage Waiver), or PAI (Personal Accident Insurance). These waivers are designed to reduce your financial liability if the rental car is damaged, stolen, or involved in an accident.
Rental agents are often trained to sell these products aggressively, framing them as essential protection. While they can provide peace of mind, they also represent a significant daily expense.
Local Insight
Before you travel, do your homework. Many travelers are already covered. First, call your personal auto insurance provider; if you have a comprehensive policy in Canada or the US, it may extend to rental cars. Second, and most importantly, check the benefits of the credit card you used to book the rental. Many premium credit cards offer rental car CDW/LDW as a built-in benefit. Be sure to ask your card issuer specifically if their coverage is valid in Canada and if it covers potential loss of use charges, which rental companies levy to compensate for the time a damaged car is out of service.
