Phase 2: At the Rental Counter
Resist the Up-sell: Expect a hard sell on additional insurance and other extras. If you have done your research and are comfortable with your existing coverage, a firm but polite 'No, thank you' (Nein, danke) is all that is needed. Confirm the Final Price: Before signing anything, ask the agent to confirm the total, all-inclusive price. Ask them, 'Is this the Endpreis?' and have them point it out on the contract. Get Permissions in Writing: If you plan to drive to another country, ensure the cross-border permission and fee are explicitly noted on your rental agreement. Document Everything Before You Leave: Do not leave the lot without inspecting the car. Turn on your smartphone and record a slow, detailed video of the entire vehicle. Zoom in on every scratch, dent, or scuff on the body, wheels, and windshield. Open the door and film the interior, dashboard, odometer (mileage), and fuel gauge. Narrate what you are seeing. This video is your ultimate proof of the car's pre-existing condition.
