Car Rental Guide
A calm, step-by-step process to help you manage a car accident in the Czech Republic, ensuring you handle the situation correctly and protect yourself while driving a rental car.
Check if you, your passengers, and the occupants of the other vehicle(s) are okay. If it is safe to do so and the vehicles are drivable, move them to the side of the road to prevent further incidents.
Priority #1Immediately turn on your vehicle's hazard lights. Retrieve the reflective warning triangle from the car's emergency kit and place it on the road to warn oncoming traffic. The required distance is at least 50 meters behind your vehicle on regular roads and 100 meters on a motorway.
RequiredThe Czech Republic mandates that you must put on your high-visibility reflective vest before you exit the vehicle on any road outside of a municipality. This vest is a required part of the car's safety equipment and should be within reach of the driver.
MandatoryIf anyone is injured, no matter how minor it seems, call the universal European emergency number 112 immediately. This number connects you to an operator who can dispatch the necessary services and will likely speak English. Other important numbers are Police (158) and Ambulance (155).
EmergencyEven if you think the accident was your fault, do not apologize or admit liability. Stick to the facts of what happened when communicating with the other driver. Admitting fault can have serious insurance and legal implications.
Important| Condition | Action: Call the Police (Policie ČR) | Action: Use European Accident Statement |
|---|---|---|
| Any injury or death | Mandatory. Call 112 or 158 immediately. Do not move the vehicles unless instructed by the police. | Not sufficient. Police involvement is required by law. |
| Damage to one vehicle exceeds 100,000 CZK | Mandatory. This is an estimate of repair costs. If you are in any doubt, it is always safer to call the police. | Not sufficient. For high-value damage, a police report is legally required for insurance purposes. |
| Damage to public or third-party property | Mandatory. This includes damage to guardrails, lamp posts, fences, road signs, or another uninvolved parked car. | Not sufficient. Any damage to state or third-party property requires an official police report. |
| You suspect the other driver is under the influence | Mandatory. The Czech Republic has a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol and drugs. If you have any suspicion, call the police. | Do not use. A police report is essential to document the other driver's condition. |
| The other party refuses to cooperate | Mandatory. If the other driver will not provide identification, insurance details, or refuses to sign the accident statement, call the police. | Not possible. The statement requires cooperation. Police intervention is your only recourse. |
| Minor fender-bender with no injuries | Not necessary, but you can still call them if you feel uncomfortable. | Sufficient. If damage is clearly minor (well under 100,000 CZK), there are no injuries, and both parties agree on the facts, this is the standard procedure. |
Documentation
Your smartphone is an invaluable tool. Take more photos and videos than you think you need. You cannot have too much evidence.
An independent witness can be incredibly valuable if there is a dispute about how the accident happened. If there are any witnesses, politely ask for their contact information.
Collect the following: Full Name, Phone Number and/or Email Address, and a brief note of what they saw, if they are willing to provide it.
Contact Your Rental Car Company
This is your most important next step. Call the 24/7 assistance number provided by the rental company immediately. They need to be the first to know about any damage to their vehicle. They will provide specific instructions on what to do next, which may include: Where to take the car for assessment if it's drivable, How to arrange a tow if it's not, How to get a replacement vehicle, and Their specific requirements for submitting the accident report.
Insurance Follow-Up
The rental car company will typically manage the insurance claim process. Your job is to provide them with all the documentation you gathered. Promptly send them a copy of the signed European Accident Statement or provide them with the official police report number (číslo jednací). Failure to do this can lead to you being held personally liable for the full cost of the damage.
