The road to Mount Pico (PR3) is gravel in sections and steep (8-12% grades). A 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially after rain when fog can reduce visibility to near zero. Drive slowly on hairpin turns, and watch for livestock (sheep, cows) that often wander onto roads unmarked.

Fuel prices in Portugal run about €1.70-1.90 per liter for gasoline (95 octane) and €1.60-1.80 for diesel as of 2025. Pico has few gas stations—expect only 2-3 on the entire island, with limited hours (some close for lunch). Always fill up in Madalena or Lagoa before heading to remote areas. Most rentals take diesel, but verify your vehicle's fuel type to avoid costly mistakes.

The minimum age to rent in Portugal is 21, but many agencies require 23-25 for larger vehicles. If you're under 25, expect a 'young driver surcharge' of €20-35 per day. Some companies won't rent to under-21s at all. There are no senior driver fees in Portugal, but drivers over 70 may face additional insurance restrictions. Pico has mild weather but sudden fog, heavy rain, and strong winds are common, especially near Mount Pico. In winter (November-February), mountain roads can become slippery with volcanic stone surfaces. Summer is drier but dusty on unpaved sections. Always check weather forecasts before heading to higher elevations, and keep headlights on in fog. Avoid parking under lava rock formations during rain due to falling debris.
