Car Rental at Dakhla Airport (VIL)

You'll need both. Your US license alone isn't sufficient. Bring your valid US driver's license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can obtain from AAA before departure. The IDP costs around $20 and is essential for legal driving. Moroccan authorities, who administer Dakhla, may request both documents at checkpoints. Without an IDP, you risk fines or being denied a rental car.

The main N1 highway through Dakhla is paved but narrow with soft shoulders. Expect single-lane traffic each direction, strong crosswinds, and occasional sand drifts on the road. Secondary roads are often unpaved and require a 4WD vehicle. The 400km stretch to the Mauritanian border has limited services—carry extra water and fuel. Drive cautiously, especially at dawn and dusk when visibility is poor and wildlife may be present.

Gas stations are few and far between. In Dakhla city, you'll find several stations, but heading north or south on the N1, gaps of 100-200km between stations are common. Always refuel when your tank drops below half. Stations may close at night or during prayer times. Carry cash (Moroccan dirhams) as credit cards aren't always accepted. Plan your route carefully and don't assume the next station will be open.

For staying within Dakhla city and driving the main N1 highway, a standard sedan works fine. However, if you plan to explore the desert, beaches, or inland lagoons, a 4WD is strongly recommended. Sand tracks to popular spots like the White Dune or Imlili require high clearance. Many rental agencies offer 4x4 vehicles specifically for this reason. The extra cost is worth it if you want to explore beyond the main roads.

Full coverage is strongly advised. Basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) often comes with high deductibles and excludes tires, windshield, and undercarriage damage—common issues on sandy, rocky roads. Consider Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) for third-party coverage. Check if your credit card offers rental coverage, but verify it applies in Western Sahara/Morocco. Roads can be rough, so tire and glass protection is particularly valuable here.

Drive on the right side—same as the US. Speed limits are generally 60km/h in towns and 100km/h on highways, but enforcement is inconsistent. Police checkpoints are common; slow down, be polite, and have your documents ready. Honking is used frequently as a friendly signal. Don't be surprised by slow-moving vehicles, cyclists, or animals on highways. At roundabouts, traffic inside has priority. Avoid night driving when possible due to poor lighting and unexpected obstacles.
