Your Tasmanian Adventure Begins at Hobart Airport

Your valid US driver's license is accepted for rental in Tasmania. However, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended as a backup—many rental companies request it, and police may ask for it during traffic stops. The IDP is a simple translation booklet (about $20 USD through AAA) and takes 10-15 minutes to obtain at any AAA office. No written test or additional exam is required.

It feels strange for about 20-30 minutes, then becomes natural. Tasmania's roads are generally well-marked with 'KEEP LEFT' signs at tricky points. The biggest adjustment is roundabouts (traffic flows clockwise) and left-hand turns—you'll need to look right first. Rent a compact car if it's your first time; narrower streets feel less intimidating. Avoid driving at night for the first few days, as muscle memory from right-side driving takes time to override.

Expect to pay an additional AUD $20-35 per day if you're under 25. This 'young driver fee' or 'under-age surcharge' applies at all major rental companies (Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar). Drivers under 21 are generally not permitted to rent cars at all in Tasmania. Good news: Tasmania has NO toll roads. Every highway, bridge, and tunnel is free to use. This includes the impressive Gordon River Road and the drive to Wineglass Bay. Kangaroos and wallabies are the biggest hazard—over 70% of vehicle strikes in Tasmania involve kangaroos, with peak activity around dawn (5-7 AM) and dusk (5-8 PM). Slow down significantly on rural roads at these hours; headlights can freeze them in place. Wombats are slower but heavier and can total a small car on impact. If you hit an animal, pull over safely, check for injuries to yourself and passengers, and report the incident to your rental company immediately—most policies require this.

From June through September, snow chains are mandatory on many Highland roads including parts of the Central Highlands and Mt. Field National Park. Many rental companies offer chains for AUD $30-50 per rental period. All-season or winter tires are recommended if you're heading to Cradle Mountain or the Western Highlands.
