Finding the Car Rental Center

Once you have deplaned from your international flight, cleared immigration, and collected your luggage from the baggage claim carousel, you will exit through customs into the public Arrivals hall. From here, finding the rental desks is simple.

Look for the overhead signs directing you towards the Airport Center. The Car Rental Center is located on Level 1 of this central building. Follow the clear and prominent signs that read "Mietwagen / Rental Car". All the rental company desks are consolidated in this one, easy-to-find area, so you won't have to search through different terminals.

The Pickup Process: From Desk to Car

  • At the Rental Desk

An agent will process your rental agreement. Be prepared to present your valid, unexpired Passport, your valid, unexpired U.S. driver's license, an International Driving Permit (IDP), and the credit card you used to make the reservation. The agent will confirm the details of your rental, explain any charges, and offer optional add-ons like enhanced insurance or GPS. After you review and sign the rental contract, you will be given the keys to your vehicle and instructions on where to find it.

  • Getting to Your Car

Your rental car will be parked in the dedicated rental car garage. From the rental desks on Level 1, simply follow the signs for "Parking 3 / P3". This is the designated parking structure for all rental car pickups. The signs are very clear and will lead you directly to the elevators and walkways connecting to the garage. Once inside P3, look for the area specific to your rental company to locate your assigned vehicle.

Essential Tips

Key Information for a Smooth Rental

Keep these essential tips in mind to ensure a seamless experience at Zurich Airport.

Smart Renter Checklist

  • Required Documents
Switzerland strongly recommends an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your U.S. license. An IDP is an official translation and can be obtained from AAA offices before your trip. Always have your passport, U.S. license, IDP, and credit card ready.

  • Swiss Motorway Vignette
A toll sticker (vignette) is required to drive on national highways (Autobahnen). Rental cars originating in Switzerland should already have a valid vignette on the windshield (usually upper left corner or near the rearview mirror). Double-check before leaving the garage to avoid significant fines.

  • Vehicle Inspection
Before driving away, walk around the car and inspect for pre-existing damage such as scratches, scuffs, or dents. Use your smartphone to take photos or a quick video of any imperfections, and ensure all damage is noted on your rental agreement by an agent before you leave.

At the Rental Desk: What to Present

Valid Passport

Your valid, unexpired Passport is required to process the rental agreement.

U.S. Driver's License

Bring your valid, unexpired U.S. driver's license.

International Driving Permit

An IDP is strongly recommended for non-EU license holders.

Credit Card

Have the credit card you used to make the reservation on hand.

Returning Your Rental Car

  • Follow the Airport Signs

As you drive towards the airport, follow the primary road signs for "Airport / Flughafen". As you get closer, new signs will appear specifically for "Rental Car Return / Mietwagenrückgabe".

  • Enter Parking 3 (P3)

These signs will guide you directly back to the same parking structure where you picked up the car: Parking 3 (P3). Once inside, follow the signs for your specific rental company's return lane.

  • Park and Hand Over

Park in a designated spot, gather your belongings, and lock the vehicle. An agent will typically be present to check the car in, inspect it for new damage, and confirm the fuel level. Drop the keys with the agent or at a nearby return kiosk. If you are returning the vehicle after hours, look for the secure key drop-box for your rental company.
